Arizona Residents Charged with Multiple Tax Crimes

Tax Evasion and Filing Fraudulent Returns Leads To Supervised Probation and Restitution Ordered for Arizona Residents

The Arizona Department of Revenue continues to diligently investigate tax violations that appear to be willful and intentional on the part of the taxpayer, paid preparer, or other entities.

  • On February 24, 2021, Alan Barreto pleaded guilty to illegal control of enterprise and failure to file a tax return.  Barreto was sentenced on April 19, 2021 to three years of supervised probation and ordered to pay restitution of $55,494.28 to the Arizona Department of Revenue.  Barreto failed to pay TPT for his business and also failed to file and pay Arizona income tax.
  • On April 6, 2021, Virginia Ramirez-Rodriguez was sentenced to four years of supervised probation and ordered to pay $3,660 in restitution.  Ramirez-Rodriguez, a paid tax preparer, previously pleaded guilty to two counts of preparing false returns in 2015 and 2016 for her clients and one count of fraudulent schemes and artifices.  In doing so, she diverted their tax refunds into her personal bank accounts.
  • On April 14, 2021, Ubaidullah Abdur-Rahman was sentenced to two years of supervised probation and ordered to pay $15,779.38 in restitution to the Arizona Department of Revenue.  Ubaidaullah had previously pleaded guilty to failing to pay tax, filing a tax return, and fraudulent schemes and practices.
  • On May 10, 2021, Shamsuddeen Abdur-Rahman was sentenced to two years of supervised probation and ordered to pay $5,917.43.  Shamsuddeen pleaded guilty to failure to pay tax, file a tax return, and fraudulent schemes and practices.
