Arizona is one of a small handful of states participating in the pilot of the IRS Direct File program, which gives taxpayers an option to e-file their federal tax returns directly for the first time in US history.

While the IRS Direct File program is for federal returns only, Arizona has chosen to join the pilot program, by providing a service that integrates state tax filing with IRS Direct File, a major step in creating a seamless federal-state system.

The Arizona filing software is being built by Code for America, a civic tech nonprofit that works with community leaders and governments to build equitable, accessible digital tools and services. Eligible Arizona taxpayers will be able to use this platform for the 2024 tax season.

“At the Arizona Department of Revenue, we are continuously seeking out ways to make filing taxes simpler, easier, and more seamless,” said Arizona Department of Revenue Director Rob Woods. “We believe that by joining the IRS Direct File Pilot program, we will bring a valuable and welcome service to Arizona’s taxpayers. For those who qualify, this will be a helpful option to file in the coming tax season.”

“Code for America will work shoulder-to-shoulder with Arizona to create a free and easy way for Direct File users in the Grand Canyon State to file their state taxes,” said Amanda Renteria, CEO of Code for America. “This will put Arizona on the leading edge of tax filing in America. Solving state filing is central to the IRS’s Direct File pilot, and Code for America is thrilled to work with our partners to demonstrate a way forward. Together, we are building a cohesive and seamless system for tax filers and helping Arizonans access the refunds they are owed.”

With this pilot program, once eligible taxpayers have finished their federal returns using Direct File, they can opt to e-file their state tax return through the platform developed by Code for America and ADOR. Eligibility to participate in the Direct File pilot will be limited to filers reporting only certain types of income and claiming limited credits and deductions.

Arizona is one of only four states joining this innovative effort. Other participating states include New York–which is also partnering with Code for America—along with Massachusetts and California. By working with the IRS, these first states will help set the foundation for a seamless federal-state Direct File system with the goal that it be scaled across the nation in the coming years.

For more information, visit Code for America’s information page.

About Code for America

Code for America is the leading civic tech nonprofit that works with community leaders and governments to build equitable, accessible digital tools and services. Many of the mistakes can be avoided by e-filing a return. Filing electronically is easier, faster, more accurate and more secure than filing by paper.

Matching Filing Status: The filing status does not match the information provided in the rest of the return. If you are filing married separately or jointly, include spouse information in the same order as last year (if applicable), and retract it if you are filing single or head of household. Compute deductions and tax tables based on your filing status.

Different Tax Year Forms: Attaching mix-matched individual income tax year forms and supporting documents with the front page of the current tax year form, along with crossing out the tax year and marking another tax year, is unacceptable. You must submit all the same individual income tax year forms together.

Missing Return Information: Sending incomplete returns makes it difficult, if not impossible, to process. A return must be completed in its entirety and with accuracy for ADOR to process, including essential items like full name, taxpayer identification number, address, and filing status.

Error in Calculation: It is common to miscalculate amounts when doing taxes on your own. Fillable, calculating forms do the math for you and are scanned into our system for quicker processing.

Interpreting in Handwriting: ADOR does its best to decipher taxpayers’ handwriting, but it can be challenging. If filing a paper return, use fillable forms and print with black ink and on white paper; this way, ADOR staff does not have to interpret handwriting.

Mistake in Tax Credit Codes: Using an incorrect Qualifying Charity Code on Form 321, Public School CTDS Code on Form 322, or Qualifying Foster Care Charity Code on Form 352. Verify the charity codes and the school codes.

Absent Tax Recapture Credit Form: Not completing and including Form 301 with the return and matching the information from Form 301 with the return. Be sure to include Form 301 and the corresponding credit form(s) for which you computed your credit(s) with your individual income tax return.

Duplicate Returns and Payments: Duplicate returns cause ADOR to process another return, resulting in an informational return and delaying processing. Repeat payments result in being charged multiple times and likely are returned as a refund if no other liabilities exist. Do not send another check electronically if a payment has been mailed.

Check Information Not Present: Not completing all the information on the paper check; accurate address, pay to, amount, memo, signature. Ensure the paper check contains the written amount on the amount line and amount box, along with the tax identification numbers and tax period on the check memo line. When sending a payment, ensure it is sent with the original tax return or a payment voucher so it can be applied to the correct account and tax period promptly. If a payment is sent in without a corresponding tax return or payment voucher, ADOR must research which account it belongs to and the payment will likely be delayed.

Sending Items to the Correct Agency: Submitting an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) return, payment, or correspondence to the Arizona Department of Revenue will not be processed by ADOR. Instead, it will need to be forwarded. Make sure to send the ADOR payment with your state return to the correct ADOR P.O. Box and the IRS payment with your federal return sent to the IRS address.

To receive income tax updates, be sure to subscribe to the “Individual Income Tax” list. You’ll need to provide your Social Security number, filing status, zip code, and tax year.

If you e-filed, you will receive an acknowledgement email within 48 hours of submission from the software program you have chosen. You can start tracking your refund about three business days after the receipt notice is received.

If you filed a paper return, plan to wait four weeks to start tracking your refund. That gives the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) time to open the mail, sort, and digitally scan the return into our system. The data must still be manually entered, verified, and checked for accuracy for the return to be considered processed.

Typical Refund Process Timeframes

ADOR is dedicated to continuously improving our fraud prevention program and verifying information in our system. All returns go through fraud-detection reviews and accuracy checks before ADOR issues any refunds.

E-filers: Anticipate your tax refund to process in a couple weeks after receiving an acknowledgment that the Department has your return.

Paper filers: Allow a minimum of 10 weeks from date filed to process the return.

Refund Exceptions

For refunds by direct deposit, you can check your bank account after two business days from your refund approval date.

Taxpayers are ultimately responsible for entering the correct account and routing number, and because of this, if the refund is delivered to the wrong account, the receiving account must return the funds before a new refund can be delivered. Additionally, keep in mind that when your bank processes the refund determines when you will see the deposit in your account. Please contact your bank directly to check on the processing time of the refund before calling ADOR.

If you used a tax preparation service and selected them to receive the money, their deposit service will send you the funds, delaying the final deposit date.

Refunds by paper check are mailed in approximately three to five business days after approval, and delivery times vary depending on USPS. You can check your mailbox after 5-6 business days.

The Department of Revenue will always try to process a refund in the method requested by a taxpayer. There are times however, when the agency will need to process a refund in the form of a paper check.

More Information

If you receive a notice requesting for more information, your tax refund will be delayed until ADOR gathers the requested information. Then, it will take about six more weeks to finish the process.

To learn more about how to check your refund status, check out the “Where’s My Refund?“ resource on our webpage, azdor.gov/wheres-my-refund.

Tue, 23 Apr 2024 17:30:00 +0000 [email protected] 11864 at https://azdor.gov TPT Filer -
