Direct File Now Accepting 1099-R Retirement Filings
Phoenix, AZ – Individual taxpayers who use Form 1099-R to report retirement income are now eligible to use Direct File for their federal and Arizona state taxes, further expanding the types of income, deductions and credits supported by the platform. Form 1099-R is used to report the distribution of retirement benefits such as pensions, annuities, or other retirement plans.
Arizona is one of 25 states partnering with the IRS to offer taxpayers the opportunity to file their taxes directly with the IRS and Arizona Department of Revenue online for FREE. An estimated 1.7 million Arizona taxpayers are eligible to use the tool.
Direct File is mobile friendly, and is available in English and Spanish. With Direct File, taxpayers begin by filing their federal return on the IRS’ tool at directfile.irs.gov. The tool walks them through interview-style questions to prepare the return, just as with other tax preparation software.
Once the federal return is completed, the taxpayer will have the option to click a button taking them directly to the FileYourStateTaxes tool to prepare their state return. Much of the information from the federal return will be populated into the state tool, creating a quick, seamless experience. It’s simple, it’s accurate, it’s secure, and it’s free.
Direct File may be a good option if you:
-
Lived in Arizona for all of 2024.
-
Earned all of your income in Arizona in 2024.
-
Plan to use the same filing status for both your federal and state tax returns.
-
Aren’t using the filing status Married Filing Separately.
Direct File does not replace existing tax filing services, but is another option for eligible taxpayers who choose to use it based on their own tax circumstances.
