Phoenix, AZ – With the opening of tax season beginning on January 27, the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) is pleased to continue its participation in the IRS Direct File program, offering eligible Arizona taxpayers the opportunity to file their taxes online for FREE. This year, the program will be expanded to include more types of income, deductions and credits, and it will be available on day one of tax filing season. An estimated 1.7 million Arizona taxpayers will be eligible to use the tool.

The FileYourStateTaxes platform is mobile friendly, and is available in English and Spanish. With Direct File, taxpayers begin by filing their federal return on the IRS’ tool at directfile.irs.gov. The tool walks them through interview-style questions to prepare the return, just as with other tax preparation software platforms, and this year, Direct File will have some functionality to pre-populate taxpayers' data. Once the federal return is completed, the taxpayer will have the option to click a button taking them directly to the FileYourStateTaxes tool to prepare their state return. Much of the information from the federal return will be populated into the state tool, creating a quick, seamless experience. It’s simple, it’s accurate, it’s secure, and it’s free.

ADOR is once again partnering with Code for America who built the Arizona FileYourStateTaxes filing platform. Code for America is a civic tech nonprofit that works with community leaders and governments to build equitable, accessible digital tools and services.

Direct File does not replace existing tax filing services, but is another option for eligible taxpayers who choose to use it based on their own tax circumstances.
