Free Tax Return Preparation

The following volunteer organizations offer free assistance to the elderly and other individual taxpayers that need to file their income tax electronically.

AARP Tax-Aide:

This organization offers free assistance for electronically filing federal and Arizona state returns. The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program offers free assistance to individuals 50 and older, who can’t afford a tax preparation service, to file federal and Arizona State returns. Visit the AARP Tax-Aide website for more information.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA):

The VITA Program offers free tax help to people who generally make $64,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers. Visit the IRS website for more information on VITA.

The IRS Direct File Pilot Program, a first-of-its-kind project, allows eligible Arizonans to file their state and federal returns for FREE.

While the IRS Direct File program is for federal returns only, Arizona chose to join the pilot program, providing a service that integrates state tax filing with IRS Direct File, a major step in creating a seamless federal-state system.

Once you have filed your federal tax return, you are directed to the FileYourStateTaxes tool to file your Arizona state taxes.

Arizona Free File Alliance

Some taxpayers may qualify to e-file under the Arizona Free File Alliance, which is a public-private partnership between ADOR and a consortium of tax preparation software companies. The Free File Program is open to Arizona taxpayers who meet certain criteria.
