Identity Theft
The Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) takes identity theft seriously and has enacted a variety of safeguards and efforts to combat tax-related fraud. Tax-related identity theft occurs when someone uses a Social Security Number (SSN) to file a tax return claiming a fraudulent refund. Taxpayers are normally not aware this has occurred until they attempt to file their own tax returns and are alerted that a return has already been filed using that SSN. Even though they are a victim, taxpayers are left with the hassle of providing documentation as proof of identity and a delay in receiving their refund.
Unfortunately, anyone can be the victim of tax-related identity theft. Thieves can steal an identity using card-skimming devices, unsecure Wi-Fi networks, stolen mail, data breaches, computer viruses, unsafe smartphone applications, or by hacking email accounts to obtain passwords and financial data. Thieves also use phishing schemes or false pretenses to obtain personal information via fake websites or scams over email and phone.
Individuals can check the status of an Arizona tax refund by visiting ADOR's “Where’s my Refund?” link. Protecting taxpayers from identity theft is a priority. As a preventative measure, the department may issue your refund as a paper check instead of a direct deposit to your account.
